New groups are formed each academic year and based on student request.
Group Counseling is often the most effective counseling intervention.
Counseling groups typically have 5-8 members and are led by one or two counselors. Most groups meet weekly for 75 minutes and run for a varying number of weeks. Both undergraduate and graduate students can participate in counseling groups.
Group counseling is a place to:
- talk confidentially about your concerns.
- share your concerns with others students who have similar issues.
- receive support from group members and counselors.
- learn about alternative ways of looking at personal problems.
Group counseling helps because students:
- learn that they are not alone with their concerns.
- learn new ways to resolve their problems from both peers and counselors.
- often get a sense of increased competence when they learn that they can help others.
- learn about themselves and new ways of relating to others.
Each group member decides how much he or she wants to share. Because of the climate of trust within the group, members feel free to care about and help each other.
Group Offerings
Students become members of a group by making an appointment with the Counseling Center. A counselor will discuss the issues of concern with you and help you to formulate a plan to begin to manage those concerns. Your counselor will then assist you in becoming part of a group. New groups are formed every academic year and vary according to student demand. Group offerings will be posted on our web page at the beginning of each academic year.
Anxiety Support Group
Do you find yourself dealing with moments of panic that cause you to sweat, shake and have difficulty breathing, are unable to stop worrying, or are just unable to relax? Would you like to learn some tools for how to begin managing these anxiety symptoms better? Join us on Wednesdays from 3-4 p.m. for an introduction to Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) for anxiety. You will learn about your anxiety, what may be causing it, and how CBT treatment will work. CBT is an evidence-based treatment that involves modifying thoughts and behaviors to help students feel better and move toward their life aims. To sign up, send an email to counseling@regaloteas.com with “Anxiety Support Group” in the subject line. We will register you for a 30-minute meeting to gather appropriate information. If you are a member of the counseling center, let your clinician know and you will be registered. Once registered, you will receive an invitation. For more information, email counseling@regaloteas.com.
Depression Support Group
If you suffer from depression or have depressive symptoms, the counseling center invites you to join the weekly Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy skills group for depression. This group involves learning and practicing skills to help alleviate some of your depressive symptoms. It will involve identifying depressive symptoms that you find disruptive in your daily life, learning skills to address these problematic symptoms, and practicing the skills between sessions. This group is not meant to fix your depression completely, and individual counseling may still be beneficial. However, this processing group can help to alleviate your depressive symptoms and give you the skills to improve your self-esteem, increase overall motivation and improve self-care routines. Join us weekly on Tuesdays at 3 p.m. Email the counseling center at counseling@regaloteas.com to register.
